DIY Wall Art Mirrors

Wall art mirrors that you make yourself can give any wall in your home the look of a fine art gallery. The supplies you need aren't expensive. Despite this, it's possible to create some sophisticated-looking mirrors using a decoupage technique. Additionally, this project allows you to dress up a plain mirror, making it possible to use a mirror that you wouldn't otherwise hang in a gallery display.

Things You'll Need

  • Mirrors
  • Paper images
  • Scissors
  • Architect's tape
  • Craft glue
  • Paint stir stick
  • Sponge brushes
  • Buttons and beads

Instructions

    • 1

Get several mirrors with plain wood frames. If you want to create more visual interest, look for a few mirrors that have scalloped or carved frames. Choose a variety of mirrors that will look good grouped together on a wall.

    • 2

Select a variety of images. Pages taken from a newspaper or black and white illustrated magazine will give your mirrors an art look. Other possible patterns include old illustrations from books or sepia-toned photographs. Images printed on thinner pieces of paper work best for this decoupage technique.

    • 3

Cut the images out. For example, if you're making frames with a vegetable theme, cut the individual veggies out from your illustrations. If you don't have enough of the images to cover the whole frame of the mirror, make copies of the visual materials first.

    • 4

Cover the mirror with painter's tape so that the part of the mirror that comes into contact with the frame is covered. This prevents the glue from getting on the mirror.

    • 5

Create a decoupage mixture by mixing equal parts water and craft glue. Find the craft glue at arts and crafts stores. Make this in a bowl, using a paint stir stick to mix it up. Commercial decoupage mediums are also available.

    • 6

Wet your sponge brush, squeezing out the extra water, and then dip it into the glue mixture.

    • 7

Coat the frame of the mirror with the glue mixture.

    • 8

Dip one of your cut pieces of paper into the glue mixture and attach it to the mirror.

    • 9

Continue to add your cut graphics onto the mirror's frame until the whole frame is covered. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 10

Add several coats of the glue mixture to the frame. Allow each one to dry before adding the next.

    • 11

Decorate the corners of the mirror with antique beads or buttons. Glue them on with undiluted craft glue. Choose buttons or beads that match the visual theme of your art mirror. For example, if you've chosen to decorate the frames with antique newspapers, look for shiny black beads or buttons made of ceramic that have been painted with silver paint. Alternatively, glue the beads or buttons on the mirror itself to create designs.

Pull the tape off the mirrors carefully.
