How to Make a Hanging Vine Ball Lamp

Using pre-made grapevine balls create simple, rustic ornaments to adorn a front porch or window. Adding lights to the balls helps create a hanging lamp, perfect for adding soft, romantic light to a space. Much like the popular candle lights, hanging grapevine lights around a home’s entrance creates a warm, welcoming glow. These lamp ornaments are easy to create and customize, making them an ideal project for the whole family.

Things You'll Need

  • Grapevine ball
  • 50 count, mini-holiday light strands
  • Flat edged, narrow tool
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Tweezers
  • 2-inch-wide ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Silk flowers (optional)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks

Instructions

    • 1

Place the grapevine ball on a flat work surface, keeping a good grip on one side of the ball. Using a butter knife, flat-head screwdriver or other narrow, flat tool, gently push a string of lights into the interior of the grapevine ball.

    • 2

Cut 20 pieces of floral wire, each piece measuring about 3 inches long. Keep a strong grasp on the ball, and use tweezers to pull the light strands toward the surface of the ball. Allow some of the lights to stick out from the grapevine ball, creating a spiky-looking orb. Allow the end of the cord with the plug to stick out of one area of the ball for easy access.

    • 3

Slip a piece of floral wire under the wire and light strand cord. Bring the ends of the wire around to the outside of the ball and twist to secure the wire in place. Repeat all around the ball to anchor the lights in place. Trim off excess wires.

Determine which area will be the top of the lighted ball. Cut a length of ribbon measuring 6 inches long. Push one end of the ribbon through the separation in the vines at the top of the light. Pull through until both ends are equal. Tie the two ends together in a knot to create a loop.

Choose three or four silk blossoms to decorate the grapevine. Place a dab of hot glue on the flower’s plastic backing. Press to the vines to secure the blossoms in place.
