How to Make a Room Divider From Recycled Materials

Create distinctive room dividers by repurposing old architectural building supplies. Recycled materials, such as windows and doors, are decorative choices for making partitions that separate sections of any room. Look for old building materials at antique stores, flea markets, thrift stores and architectural salvage stores. Make at least three individual panels using similar recycled materials, and then connect the panels together with decorative hinges. With a little imagination, you can make a divider that becomes a focal point in your room.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 old shutters, uniform sizes
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker
  • Hinges
  • Hinge screws
  • Screw driver
  • Wood doors
  • Light grade sandpaper
  • Paint/stain
  • Paint brush/sponge
  • Old windows
  • Stained glass paint
  • Decorative feet
  • Chains
  • 2-inch-square wood strips
  • Saw
  • Fabric
  • Staple gun

Instructions

Create a room divider to fit your shabby chic or country style décor, using old shutters and decorative hinges. Lay the shutters side-by-side and attach three decorative iron hinges to the common edges. Place one hinge in the center and one 8 to 10 inches above and below the center hinge.

Make a room divider with paneled or plain hollow doors, using the same hinge techniques as with the old shutters. Select two to three recycled doors that are the same height; the doors need not be the same style. Sand and then re-stain or paint the doors to suit your personal style before attaching decorative or plain hinges along the common edges. Plain-door room dividers are blank slates for hanging framed art and small shelving.

Connect a series of old windows together with hinges to create a distinctive room divider. Piano hinges or several 3-inch-long hinges joining the common edges work to connect the windows. Create panels from a variety of window sizes, join three small windows in a vertical row to make the center panel for the room divider, and then attach two long windows on each side of the center panel to create a finished divider. Attach the hinges to the window frames; paint the panes with stained glass or regular glass paint for an artistic touch. Attach decorative feet along the bottom of the windows to help them stand, or suspend the window room divider from the ceiling with chains.

Make your own fabric room divider to complement your décor, using recycled fabric. With 2-inch-square wood strips, make a frame equal to the overall height and one-third of the total desired width of the room divider. You’ll need three panels; each one should be the same width. Cover the frame with leftover fabric; spray adhesive, hot glue or staples work to hold the fabric onto the frame. If you use staples, camouflage them with a strip of ribbon or cording. Attach hinges to the common edges of the frames, and add decorative feet to the bottom of each frame to complete the room divider.
