How to Make a Raised Dog Bed With a Canopy

An elevated dog bed provides a comfortable and cozy place for your best friend to sleep. It keeps your dog away from any damp on the floor and out of the way of cold drafts, insects and mites. It also prevents any doggy smells or stains from getting into your carpet and allows air to circulate freely around the bed. Add a canopy for a feeling of security and a little bit of style.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe
  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • Four four-way PVC pipe connectors
  • Four three-way PVC pipe connectors
  • Heavy-duty fabric
  • Drill
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the PVC pipe to the correct length for the size bed you want to build. The final dimensions should be approximately 22 by 29 inches for a small bed, 28 by 32 inches for a medium bed and 30 by 38 inches for a large bed.

    • 2

Insert two pieces of pipe into the four-way PVC connector, leaving you with an empty connector facing up and an empty connector facing down. Insert connectors onto the ends of both pieces of pipe, and insert another piece of pipe into these connectors, leaving you with a rectangular frame. Hammer the corners to ensure a snug fit.

    • 3

Cut four pieces of pipe to approximately 6 to 8 inches in length to serve as the legs. Insert these into the connectors on each corner of the frame, and hammer in place.

    • 4

Cut pieces of heavy-duty fabric or canvas so it is approximately 4 inches larger all round than the frame of the dog bed. Lay the fabric face-down on a flat surface, and position the frame on top, with the legs pointing upward. Note that the frame will not lie flush to the surface because there is still an empty connector on each corner of the top of the frame.

    • 5

Fold the corners of the fabric inward so that they are within the area of the frame. Starting on one of the long sides, fold the cloth over until it reaches to the center of the pipe on the bottom side of the frame. Screw the fabric into the pipe to secure it in place, using approximately six screws for a small bed and eight for a large. Repeat until the fabric is secured all around the frame.

    • 6

Turn the bed right side up, and insert four pieces of pipe into the upward-facing connectors. The length of these pipes depends on the size of your dog; they should be high enough to allow the dog to sit up in the bed. Insert a three-way connector onto the top of each piece, and insert pipes into these connectors to create a frame around the top of the bed.

    • 7

Measure the top of the frame, the back and the sides. Cut a piece of fabric that will cover the top of the frame and reach down the back to the pipe that to which the bed fabric is attached. Cut two side pieces, and sew them to the top and back piece to create a canopy. Leave the front of the bed open to allow the dog easy access.
