How to Troubleshoot a Tumbler Dryer

A tumble dryer features a horizontally positioned steel drum that rotates, effectively tumbling the clothes over one another. The tumbling action and heat from the dryer work together to dry your clothes and linens. Sometimes, a situation arises in which your tumble dryer isn’t doing its job as you would like. If you encounter performance problems with your tumble dryer, use these at-home troubleshooting tips to get it working right before you call the dealer for service.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the power cord to ensure it’s plugged securely into the wall outlet if your dryer won’t start. Check your fuse box to see if a fuse has blown if it still won’t work after you plug it in properly.

    • 2

Ensure that the door is closed completely and the ‘Start’ button is pressed in completely if the dryer won’t turn on. Set the timer according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific tumble dryer.

    • 3

Pull out the lint screen and clean it off completely if your laundry isn't coming out totally dry when the cycle is finished.

    • 4

Select the correct temperature setting or program to match the type of load you have in the dryer if it isn’t drying your items thoroughly. Remove some of the clothes from the dryer and use smaller loads if they are still damp when the cycle is complete.

Inspect the hoses running from the dryer to ensure none of them are bent or kinked if the laundry isn’t as dry as you would like it to be.
