How to Replace a Whirlpool Dryer Cylinder Seal

Whirlpool dryers include a felt seal that aligns the rim of the drum cylinder and helps to prevent heat from leaving the unit when the door is shut and the unit is running. If the seal begins to fall off, manually install a new seal on the cylinder's rim by taking out the entire drum from the dryer. Order a new seal and high-temperature adhesive from the Whirlpool manufacturer or an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your Whirlpool dryer away from the wall and disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Pull off the plastic end caps on the sides of the top control panel and remove the screws from each side of the control panel using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Lift the control panel up all the way so that it rests on its hinges and remove the screws from the back of the top panel.

    • 4

Slide the top panel off the dryer and set it aside. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the area between the two lower panels and press in both fastening clips on each corner using the screwdriver.

    • 5

Lift up and remove the entire lower panel. Unhook the door springs on each side and remove the screws from the bottom of the upper panel.

    • 6

Remove the screws from the lint screen duct, which is the metal duct in the lower area below the drum and disconnect the motion sensor wire from the bottom right side of the upper panel.

    • 7

Disconnect the door switch wire connector from the top right corner of the upper panel and remove the screws from the top of the upper panel.

    • 8

Lift up and remove the entire upper panel. Press on the pulley near the back of the dryer drum and lift the belt off the pulley.

    • 9

Lift out the entire drum from the dryer and set it down on a flat surface. Peel off the old seal from the front of the drum cylinder.

    • 10

Remove excess residue from the seal using a wet cloth. Apply the high-temperature adhesive all around the rim of the drum.

    • 11

Press the new seal around the rim, and allow at least 20 minutes for the adhesive to dry. Place the drum back into the dryer.

    • 12

Slide the belt back onto the pulley and place the upper panel back onto the dryer. Reinsert the screws into the top of the upper panel.

    • 13

Reconnect the door switch connector and reconnect the motion sensor to the bottom of the upper panel. Reinsert the screws into the lint screen duct.

    • 14

Reinsert the screws to the bottom of the upper panel and reconnect the door springs on each side. Place the lower panel back on so that it snaps into place.

    • 15

Slide the top panel back on and reinsert the screws into the top panel. Pull the control panel back down and reinsert the screws.

    • 16

Place the plastic end caps back onto each side of the control panel and plug the power cable back into the wall outlet.
