How to Fix a Leaking Maytag Drain Pump

A puddle of water beneath your Maytag washing machine can be an indication of a leaking drain pump. The purpose of the drain pump is to pump out the used water inside the machine into the sewer system. Because there can be a number of reasons why a drain pump is leaking -- from loose bolts to a bad gasket to faulty wiring -- you'll need to check different pump elements to help pinpoint the source of the leak and repair it.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the Maytag washer by unplugging it from the wall socket or other plug where it's connected.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply valves for both the hot and cold water located behind the washer by turning the knobs all the way to the right.

    • 3

Use a hexhead screwdriver or socket wrench to remove the screws holding the control panel in place. Lift the control panel up and away from the top of the cabinet. Don't pull too hard or quickly, because the control panel will still be attached to the wiring harness inside the appliance.

    • 4

Insert a putty knife between the top of the machine and the front cover. Lift up the top of the machine and rest it back against the control panel.

    • 5

Use the hex wrench to loosen the bracket bolts holding the front panel in place. Pull the front panel out of the washer.

    • 6

Locate the washer pump underneath the tub in the center of the unit. You should see the drain hose connected to the back end of the pump.

    • 7

Check that the pump is tightly in place and the bolts aren't loose. Tighten them, if needed. Restore the power and the water to the washing machine and see if that fixed the problem.

    • 8

Loosen the clamp connecting the end of the drain hose to the pump with a screwdriver. Slide the pump down the drain hose. Pull the drain hose off of the pump.

    • 9

Use a socket wrench or wrench to loosen the bolts holding the pump in place on the motor. Pull the pump out from beneath the appliance.

    • 10

Check the pump for obvious damage or broken parts, such as the impeller. Many Maytag drain pump replacement parts can be ordered online (see Resources).

    • 11

Use a voltmeter to test continuity across the pump's electrical connections to see if they're within the appliance specifications. These can be found in service manuals for your model of Maytag appliance. If an error is found, try replacing wires or contacts to see if that brings the pump back up to spec.

    • 12

Replace the pump, if necessary. This may be the easiest solution if you don't have time to break down and rebuild a pump.

    • 13

Replace the pump gasket that goes between the pump and the washer drain. Use the old gasket as a guide to purchase the correct size. Place the new gasket over the pump before reconnecting the pump to the appliance.

    • 14

Replace the pump in the Maytag washer. Secure it with the pump bolts. Reconnect the drain hose and secure it with the drain hose clamp. Replace the front cover and secure the cover. Lower the top panel and snap it into place. Secure the control panel with the screws.

    • 15

Restore the water and electricity to the Maytag washer.
