How to Replace Tub Bearings on a Maytag Washer

The tub bearings in your Maytag washing machine can fail over time, which will cause the washer to not function properly. The purpose of the tub bearings is to ensure the washtub spins and agitates correctly. Save yourself some money by replacing the tub bearings yourself instead of hiring a repair technician. Before you begin the repair, consult the warranty information included with your Maytag washer. Repairing the washing machine yourself could void the warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the washing machine from the electrical outlet. Turn off the washing machine water supply, which is typically attached to the wall behind the appliance. Disconnect the drain hose and water lines from the washing machine.

    • 2

Slide a putty knife between the top of the washing machine and the washer cabinet. Use your free hand to lift the top of the washer up and off.

    • 3

Take out the tub ring by first snapping the tub ring clips that secure it in place with light pressure from your fingers. Lift the tub ring carefully out of the washing machine and set it aside.

    • 4

Remove the screw located at the bottom of the agitator with a screwdriver. Lift the agitator out of the washing machine and set it aside.

    • 5

Place a spanner nut wrench on top of the spanner nut and carefully tap the wrench in a clockwise motion with a hammer until you loosen the spanner nut. Remove the spanner nut and the cone-shaped piece under the nut.

    • 6

Lift the spin drum carefully out of the washing machine and set it aside. Remove the screw located at the bottom of the stem with a Torx T20 screwdriver.

    • 7

Set the spanner nut wrench on top of the stem. Use a hammer to carefully tap the spanner nut wrench clockwise to remove the stem. Grasp the rubber piece on the stem and seal and -- while turning -- lift it out of the tub.

    • 8

Use a utility knife to cut and remove the old piece of rubber from around the tub bearing. Apply a liberal amount of lubricant onto the old tub bearing.

    • 9

Locate the three screws that hold the tub in place. These screws are generally located at the bottom of the tub. Place a 1/2-inch wrench on top of the head of the screw to hold it in place and use a 1/2-inch socket wrench to loosen the nut. Remove the nut, washer, square metal piece and nut. Repeat this step on the other two screws.

    • 10

Grasp the tub and lift it up. Lay the tub at an angle inside the washer cabinet. Use the sides of the cabinet to prop the tub up. Pull the water level switch hose out of the tub. Remove the tub completely from the washer cabinet.

    • 11

Put on work gloves then place one hand on top of the tub bearing inside the tub. Press down until the old bearing pops out. Wipe out the inside and outside of the tub with paper towels.

    • 12

Spread a thin layer of grease onto the rubber part of the new tub bearing. This will allow the bearing to slide into place easier. Insert the tub bearing into the hole from the outside of the tub. Push the bearing into the hole and twist the bearing until it is flush against the tub.

    • 13

Reassemble the washing machine in the reverse order you dissembled it.
