How to Replace the Inner Tub Bearing on a Frigidaire

When your Frigidaire top-loading washing machine begins not spinning correctly or makes an unpleasant grinding noise, the inner tub bearing requires replacing. Hiring a repair technician is an expensive option; you could instead try the option of replacing the inner tub bearing yourself. Before attempting to replace the inner tub bearing, first consult the warranty on your Frigidaire washing machine. Repairing the appliance yourself could void the warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Frigidaire washing machine from the electrical outlet. Turn the water pipes connected to the washer off and unhook the water supply hoses.

    • 2

Remove the top and back panels of the washing machine by unscrewing the screws with a Philips-head screwdriver. Remove the two screws securing the weight on the back half of the drum. Slide the weight carefully from the drum.

    • 3

Slip the drive belt off and place to the side. Carefully the cut the wire tie and unplug the motor. Allow the bottom wiring to stay in the washer.

    • 4

Use a socket wrench to remove the four bolts securing the motor in place. Lift the motor out of the washer and set aside.

    • 5

Look to the front right for a screw and rubber drain trap. Unscrew the screw and remove the trap. Use your fingertips to squeeze the snap ring holding the water level sensor in place. Remove the sensor and set aside. Pull the small hose off the water level switch.

    • 6

Disconnect the two connectors attached to the motor control board. Disconnect the one connector attached to the pump motor.

    • 7

Unscrew the screws securing the pump motor and the motor control board with a Philips-head screwdriver. Remove the control board, pump motor and set aside.

    • 8

Press the lock tab and slide the shock pins out of the tub. Remove the shocks from the tub.

    • 9

Support the drum by placing a few pieces of wood directly under the drum. Remove the tube that runs from the top of the outer tank. The wood you placed underneath will now support the weight of the drum.

    • 10

Use a utility knife to remove the glue on the front panel where the door seal is secured. Remove the holder clip. The washing machine drum is now hanging from two springs.

    • 11

Find the clip holders that secure the springs to the drum and remove them. Grasp one side of the drum, lift the spring while moving toward the center and disconnect the drum from the spring frame by lowering it. Repeat this process on the other side of the drum. The drum is now resting on the supports.

    • 12

Lift the drum carefully up and move it out of the cabinet from the rear. The washing machine cabinet should now be empty.

    • 13

Lay a blanket out flat and place the drum face flat on the blanket. Unscrew the screws that secure the two halves of the drum together. Separate the two halves and lay them beside each other. With the two halves separated, you can easily lift the inner tub out of the outer drum.

    • 14

Remove the bolt holding the old bearing in place with a socket wrench. Spray lubricant on the bolt and wait several minutes if you meet resistance while trying to remove it.

    • 15

Wipe the surface the new bearing will set against, using a damp cloth. Insert the new bearing into the hole you removed the old bearing from until the new bearing is flush against the surface.

    • 16

Reassemble the Frigidaire washing machine in the reverse order of disassembly.
