How to Fix the Bearing on My Maytag Washer

In time, a Maytag washing machine’s tub bearings in may fail. If the tub bearings do not properly function, the washing machine does not correctly spin or agitate. In addition, the Maytag washing machine begins making a grinding noise. Instead of purchasing a new washer or paying a repairman, replacing the tub bearing fixes the problem. Before beginning any type of repair, always consult your washing machine’s warranty. Trying to repair a Maytag washer may void its warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the washing machine’s electrical cord from the power outlet. If the washing machine is hardwired into your home’s electrical system, turn off that breaker at the main power box.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply that runs to the washing machine, disconnect the water hoses and drain line.

    • 3

Place a putty knife between the washing machine lid and the washing machine cabinet. Slide the putty knife along the gap while lifting up the top with your free hand.

    • 4

Press the clips securing the tub rings in place with your fingers to release the clips and remove the tub ring.

    • 5

Locate the screw toward the washer agitator’s bottom. Unscrew it with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the agitator from the washing machine.

    • 6

Apply lubricant to the spanner nut and wait several minutes. The lubricant helps loosen tough-to-remove nuts. Set the spanner nut wrench on the nut. Tap the spanner nut wrench’s end clockwise with a hammer. Continue tapping until you can remove the spanner nut. Remove the spanner nut and the piece underneath the nut, which has a cone shape, from the stem.

    • 7

Grasp the spin drum’s sides and lift it out of the washer. Locate the screw toward the bottom of the washer steam. Remove this screw using a Torx T20 screwdriver.

    • 8

Lay the spanner nut wrench directly on the steam. Tap the end of the spanner nut clockwise with a hammer. Grab the rubber piece at the bottom of the seal and steam. Turn the rubber piece while lifting it out of washer tub.

    • 9

Cut the old piece of rubber around the old bearing with a utility knife. Spray lubricant directly on the old bearing and wait several minutes.

    • 10

Look toward the tub’s bottom and find three screws holding it in place. Hold the screw head in place with a one-half inch wrench while loosening the nut with a half-inch socket wrench. Slide the nut, washer and metal piece out of the tub. Repeat this with the remaining two screws.

    • 11

Lift the tub carefully out of the washer cabinet. Prop the tub inside the cabinet at an angle using the washer cabinet’s sides. Remove the water level hose by pulling it carefully off the tub. Lift the tub completely out of the cabinet.

    • 12

Wear a pair of work gloves and place a hand directly on top of the bearing on the interior of the tub. Press your hand down and pop the old bearing out of the tub. Clean the tub’s interior and exterior where the new bearing will set with paper towels.

    • 13

Apply a layer of grease on new tub bearing rubber part. Insert the bearing in the hold from the exterior of the tub while pushing and twisting it in until the bearing is flush with the tub.

    • 14

Reassemble the Maytag washer in the reverse order it was dissembled.
