How to Change the Belt on a Hotpoint DLL1550BCL

A loud squealing sound coming from your Hotpoint DLL1550BCL dryer is an indication that the belt requires replacement. The belt connects the dryer drum to the motor pulley. Over time the belt stretches from the heat of the dryer causing it to slip as the motor pulley turns. The slipping of the belt causes the squealing sound as the belt slides across the drum instead of spinning the drum properly. Changing the belt on a Hotpoint DLL1550BCL does require some disassembly of the dryer cabinet.

Instructions

  1. Disassemble The Hotpoint Dryer

    • 1

Unplug your Hotpoint dryer power cord from the outlet. Pull the dryer forward 2 feet away from the back wall.

    • 2

Open the dryer door and find the screws under the top lip of the door opening. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Close the dryer door and lift the front of the top panel toward the back of the unit. The top panel hinges onto the rear of the dryer and stays in place while raised.

    • 3

Reach into the front right side of the cabinet and unplug the door switch connector. The door switch connector is a white connector. Grab both sides of the connector and pull it apart from the dryer wire connector.

    • 4

Remove the screws on the top inside front corner securing the front and side panels together with the screwdriver. Lift the front panel up to disengage the bottom clips. Move the front panel out of the way.

    Remove and Replace The Belt

    • 5

Check the configuration of the belt around the motor and idler pulley on the bottom right side of the dryer. It is necessary to position the belt in the same way. The belt goes around the drum and over the motor pulley with the idler pulley pressing against the belt to provide tension.

    • 6

Push the white idler pulley toward the drum and hold it in place. The idler pulley attaches to a spring arm to keep tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the motor pulley with your free hand. Once the belt is off the motor pulley, slowly allow the idler pulley to spring back toward the right side of the cabinet.

    • 7

Lift the front of the drum slightly with one hand while pulling the belt off the drum with your free hand. It is not necessary to remove the drum. Do not lift the front of the drum more than 1 inch as it could cause damage to the rear bearing.

    • 8

Put the new belt over the drum while lifting the front of the drum once more. The belt goes around the small track in between the beveled edges around the rear of the drum.

    • 9

Reach under the drum and move the white idler pulley toward the drum. Route the belt over the motor pulley. Slowly release the idler pulley until it engages and tightens the belt.

    Reassemble Dryer Cabinet

    • 10

Set the bottom of the front panel into the slots at the base of the dryer. Push the top of the front panel against the sides and secure with the retaining screws. Push the dryer wire connector and the door switch connector together until they lock into place.

    • 11

Lower the top of the dryer over the cabinet. Open the dryer door and secure the top with the retaining screws. Close the dryer door.

    • 12

Plug the dryer cord back into the outlet. Push the dryer back toward the rear wall.
