Washing Machine Only Leaks When the Cycle Changes

When a washing machine only leaks when the cycle changes, the problem may be due to one of several issues, depending on where the leak originated. As a washing machine progresses from the rinse cycle to the spin cycle, excess water is removed from the clothes to facilitate drying.
  1. Drain or Standpipe

    • Washing machines drain water from the back of the appliance, through a drain hose, into a standpipe which is tied in to the sewer or septic system. As the unit switches from the rinse or soak cycle to the spin cycle, it discharges excess water through the drain hose to the standpipe. A problem at the hose or standpipe, such as a cracked hose or clogged pipe, will cause the unit to leak only during these cycle changes.

    Door of Front-Loader

    • A front loading washing machine door may be prone to leaking at different points in the washing cycle. During the soak cycle, for instance, you may find the bottom portion of the door to be leaking. If the door is closed properly and the unit isn't overloaded, check the rubber gasket surrounding the door for any signs of damage or cracks, and repair or replace it as necessary.

    Underneath the Machine

    • During the spin cycle, the washing machine spins the drum filled with clothes to wring out excess water. The water drains through small holes in the inner drum into an outer drum. This drum is then tied to the drain hose. Many newer units have plastic outer drums and, over time, cracks and splits may form causing leaks. The drum will need to be replaced by an authorized service center for your particular brand and model.

    Fill Area

    • If your washing machine leaks from the area where water enters the machine, and only when the unit switches to the soak or rinse cycle, you have an issue with your water inlet spout. The water inlet spout is the small piece of metal or, more commonly, plastic that directs water from the inlet hoses into the machine's drum. If the spout cracks or is damaged, leaks can occur. Make sure the inlet spout is functioning properly and repair or replace it as necessary.
