My Maytag Atlantis Washer Is Loud During the Spin Cycle

The Maytag Atlantis is a top loading washing machine designed for home use. As you use the washer, you can encounter a variety of noises during the various cycles. If the machine gets especially loud during the spin cycle, it might be something that you can fix on your own.
  1. Weak Floors

    • The washer will make a loud vibrating or rattling noise if it's sitting on a weak floor. To reduce noise, try to put the washer on a solid floor, such as concrete. If you cannot do this, create a sturdier surface with a piece of 3/4-inch-wide plywood. With the assistance of a friend, lift the washer and slide the plywood under it. Obtain enough plywood to fit under the dryer as well. Use a tape measure to determine how much surface you need to cover.

    Normal Motor Noise

    • If the sound you're hearing is a high pitched whirring noise, it may be the normal motor noise. During the spin cycle, the washer's motor speeds up very quickly before slowing back down. This noise can be loud but is part of the normal spin cycle. You can’t do anything to stop it, but if your laundry room has a door you can close it to stifle some of the noise.

    Sitting Level

    • Your Atlantis washer has adjustable leveling legs. When the washer is installed, these legs must be adjusted so the unit sits level. Over time, the washer may need an adjustment. When this happens, you can hear a loud noise during the spin cycle. See if the washer rocks in place when you push on it. If so, it needs a leveling adjustment. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts on the legs so you can change their height.

    Laundry Load

    • If you overload the washer or don't evenly distribute the laundry items when you load it, you may get a loud noise during the spin cycle. This is due to the washer becoming unbalanced. Usually what happens is that more of the laundry ends up one side of the washer tub than the other. The laundry can get tangled together and make a loud noise as it bounces off the sides of the washer tub during the spin cycle. Either put less laundry in the washer or stop the machine to redistribute items to stop the noise.
