How to Change a Gasket in a Dryer

The door seals, or gaskets, on the inside of your dryer's door should be inspected and maintained regularly. The rubber gaskets can become moldy and break down over time. A worn or missing seal causes the dryer to dry less efficiently, requiring a longer than usual amount of time to dry your laundry. Check the seals periodically to discover a worn gasket as soon as possible. Obtain the replacement rubber seals for your dryer's make and model to properly replace the old gaskets yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the dryer's door to reveal the door gasket or gaskets.

    • 2

Pry a section of the seal(s) from the ridge on the inside of the door with a flat screwdriver.

    • 3

Grab the seal and pull it from the door. Dispose of the worn seal.

    • 4

Remove the new seal from its packaging. Identify the two sides of the seal to determine the side of the seal that will fit into the space on the door. The seal will have a side that is smooth and an opposite side that is tapered or thinner to fit within the ridge on the dryer's door.

    • 5

Hold the seals together to evaluate the difference in circumference. The larger of the two gaskets will fit on the outermost ridge on the inside of the dryer's door if your dryer requires two seals.

    • 6

Place a section of the seal, with the tapered or thinner side down, onto the door ridge. Press firmly with your hands to wedge the seal into the ridge.

    • 7

Work your way around the door ridge with the seal, pressing firmly as you go to wedge the seal into the slot until the new seal is in place.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 3 through 6 if your dryer is equipped with multiple door gaskets.
