How to Repair a Whirlpool Stackable Washer With a Drum Not Spinning

Responsible for containing your clothes during a wash cycle, the drum of your Whirlpool washer is spun via a drive belt connected to a small electric motor. There are several common occurrences known to prevent the drum spinning when a wash cycle is started, many of which have simple solutions. Sometimes making a minor mistake while setting the controls has a knock-on effect, making it appear as though the appliance is defective. You should investigate the problem yourself before calling a technician.

Instructions

Check the washing machine's power supply. It is not uncommon for the power cord to work loose in the outlet. If your home is fitted with fuses, make sure the pair protecting your washing machine are still working. If your home uses circuit breakers, confirm that an electrical fault has not tripped any.

Ensure the hot and cold water pipes connected to the back of the washing machine are working properly. The shut-off valves where the pipes meet the wall should be turned to the "Open" position and the pipes should be free of kinks and twists. Turn off the water supply and unscrew the pipes from the shut-off valves. Just inside the pipe is a filter screen that might need to be wiped clean or replaced if it is blocked with mineral deposits.

Try entering your cleaning instructions again, making sure to press the "Start" button when you are ready to begin. Although it might sound obvious, it's easy to make a mistake starting the appliance, especially if it is new. Firmly open and close the latch to confirm the door is completely sealed. Some models do not start unless the door has been opened between washes.

Take some clothes out of the drum; it could be too heavy for the washer to safely spin without damaging the appliance. This problem commonly occurs if the drum is packed full of blankets, curtains or other heavy upholstery or if heavy items are added after the start of a cycle. Never add additional water to the drum.

Use the correct amount of HE detergent in the wash according to the instructions on the bottle. Adding too much soap causes the machine to flood with suds and cut out. The word "Suds" appears on the display of some models if there is too much soap in the drum. Most appliances deal with the excess by pausing for long periods to allow the suds to disperse. Others require you to select "Rinse, Drain & Spin" and press "Start/Pause" to disperse the soap.
