Unplug the washing machine prior to beginning to diagnose the appliance.
Inspect the motor coupling on your washing machine to determine if it is broken. The motor coupling is located on the rear of the motor and is visible from the bottom of the washing machine. To inspect it, move the washer away from the wall. Tilt the washer back so that the control panel rests on the wall. With a partner bracing the washer, look at the bottom of the appliance, behind the motor, to determine if the coupler is fully intact.
Disassemble the agitator if the coupler is intact to determine if the cam or dog ears are damaged. To disassemble the agitator, lift the lock ring on the bottom of the dispenser and on top of the agitator, and then pull off the dispenser. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the agitator cap. Remove the agitator bolt at the bottom of the agitator shaft using a socket wrench with an extension arm, and then lift the agitator out of the washer. Place the agitator on the floor, and apply pressure on the agitator base with your feet while you pull off the top portion of the agitator. Turn the top portion over to remove the cam. Inspect the cam and dog ears for cracks, breaks or any other damage, and replace if you find any damage. If you do not find damage, you must replace the washer's transmission.
