How to Remove a Kenmore HE3t Drain Pump

The drain pump in your Kenmore HE3t washer is responsible for pumping out the water used to clean your clothes into the standpipe or sink. The pump is used a number of times during each cycle, depending on the type of wash cycle you select. You might want to remove the drain pump if, after inspection, you have found it to be defective. In most cases drain problems are caused by lint or threads accumulating in the pump drain's filter screen. Be sure to rule out a blockage as the cause of the problem before you begin removing the pump.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the washing machine and unplug it from its outlet. Turn off both the hot and cold water supplies at the shutoff valve.

    • 2

Remove the three screws on the bottom edge of the front of the washer and put them to one side. Pull the toe panel downward and outward to separate it from the washer and reveal the drain pump.

    • 3

Turn the plastic cap on the front of the drain pump counterclockwise and pull out the filter. Brush out any trapped lint or fabric, and rinse the filter under a tap. Return the filter to its slot and turn it clockwise to lock into place.

    • 4

Pinch the plastic tab holding the wiring cluster in the bottom-right corner of the washer to the frame of the appliance to release it from its slot. Disconnect the green ground wire, and move the wires out of the way to improve access to the drain pump.

    • 5

Fold up a towel and place it beneath the drain pump. Water trapped in the lines will spill out when you disconnect the water hose connections. Lift up the rubber wiring cover on the right side of the pump to reveal the wiring connections; pull the plastic connection off the pump to disconnect the power.

    • 6

Pinch the ends of the metal clamp holding the black tub-to-pump hose to the drain pump with a pair of pliers. Pull the hose away from the pump to disconnect it. Some water will spill onto the towel. Repeat the process with the white pump-to-drain hose.

    • 7

Slip the middle of the orange rubber connections off the bottom of the drain pump, then tip the assembly backwards to partially unhook the two remaining rubber connections. Pull the pump forward to fully remove it from the washing machine.
