Pull the washing machine away from the wall. Turn off water to the washer.
Unscrew the valve handle to remove it from the valve stem. On most washer hookups, a screw sits in the middle of the handle. Loosen the screw to remove the handle.
Use an adjustable wrench to clamp onto the packing nut. Turn counterclockwise to loosen the nut and remove it.
Take the packing nut to a hardware or plumbing store. Packing nuts for washing machines vary in size and aren’t readily available in many stores, so it’s best to take it and size it up. If the store does not carry the same nut, they will likely need to order one from the manufacturer.
Tighten the new packing nut with the adjustable wrench. Turn clockwise to tighten the nut. Stop tightening once you feel a good bit of resistance. A packing nut’s tightness is a leading cause of leaks. A loose packing nut can be fixed, but an over-tightened nut may damage the valve stem.
Replace the valve handle and turn the water back on. Keep an eye on the packing nut. If you spot a leak, tighten the nut slightly.
