Repairing a GE Profile Agitator

General Electric Profile washing machines have an agitator located in the washtub’s center. The agitator’s purpose is moving the garments throughout the washtub, ensuring they receive a sufficient wash. The agitator has a coupling installed on the bottom that connects the agitator to the washer’s drive shaft. If the coupling is damaged, the agitator does not rotate. To restore functionality to your washing machine, remove the agitator and replace the coupling.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from the wall outlet. Never attempt repairs without first disconnecting it’s power supply.

    • 2

Open the washer lid, and then remove the agitator cap from the top of the agitator by pulling it straight off.

    • 3

Remove the seven-sixteenth inch agitator bolt. Use a socket wrench with extension arm.

    • 4

Lift the agitator out of the washing machine and place it on the floor.

    • 5

Remove the extension arm from the socket wrench and place a three-eighths inch socket on the end. Place the extension arm with the socket down into the top of the agitator shaft. Place the socket on top of the coupling, which is visible through the hole that was covered by the agitator.

    • 6

Tap the end of the extension arm using a rubber mallet knocking the coupling out of the agitator’s bottom.

    • 7

Pull the coupling out of the agitator’s bottom.

    • 8

Press the new coupling into the agitator’s underside ensuring that the tabs lock into place.

    • 9

Reinstall the agitator by reversing the steps taken to remove it from the washing machine. When replacing the agitator bolt, use the bolt included with the new coupling rather than the one that was previously installed.
