How to Fix a Dryer That Rubs

If your dryer has begun to make odd noises, such as rubbing sounds, it is likely the result of the internal components attached to the drum. In many instances, a good oiling of the motor can fix the problem. It's best to open up the unit and take a look at the drive belt as well, however. You can do this on your own without the help of a professional repairman.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your dryer and unplug the power cable.

    • 2

Slide the lint panel out of the dryer and remove the screws on the lint panel housing.

    • 3

Insert the tip of your putty knife under the corners of the top panel of the dryer. Pop the top panel off of the dryer and lift it up. Some model dryers may have an access panel on the bottom of the front of the unit. If this is the case with your dryer, you can bypass this step and pop the bottom panel off with your putty knife.

    • 4

Remove all screws from the rear of the front dryer panel and remove the front panel. You now have access to the motor and drive belt. The drive belt is wrapped around a pulley.

    • 5

Ensure that the belt is wrapped cleanly around the pulley and isn't twisted.

    • 6

Put two or three drops of lubricant on the motor bearings near the dryer drum.

    • 7

      Replace the dryer panels.
