How to Install a Pressure Switch on a Frigidaire Washing Machine

The pressure switch on a Frigidaire washing machine detects when the water reaches the desired level in the tub. The part is also known as a water level switch. It closes to activate the wash cycle and to shut off the inlet valve, preventing the tub from overflowing. It is located inside the control panel behind the water level selector knob. Air pressure from a tube connected to the bottom of the tub activates the switch.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine's power cord from the wall.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the screws on the right and left edges of the control panel using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Push gently on the front of the control panel to tip it back far enough to insert the flat edge of a putty knife in the left corner between the top of the machine and the control panel. Push down on the knife to pop out the clip holding the control panel to the left corner of the machine. Repeat on the right corner.

    • 4

Pull the plastic air tube off the port on the side of the pressure switch, located on the left, inside the control panel. Hold the end of the tube to the back panel with a piece of duct tape to keep it from falling inside.

    • 5

Grip each wired metal clip attached to the switch with needle-nose pliers and pull straight off the contact. There are two wires connected to the switch. Secure each to the washer cabinet with duct tape to keep them from falling into the machine.

    • 6

Take out the screws holding the switch to the inside of the control panel. Pull the switch off the metal rod.

    • 7

Line up the new switch with the metal rod and press it into position. Secure it with the previously removed screws.

    • 8

Take the tape off the wires and slide the connector on each one onto its corresponding contact on the new switch.

    • 9

Remove the tape from the air hose and push the end firmly onto the port on the new switch as far as it will go.

    • 10

Raise the machine's control panel and align the two clips underneath with the holes on the top of the appliance. Press on the top of the control panel to snap the clips in place.

    • 11

Insert and tighten the screws in the left and right sides of the control panel.

    • 12

Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet.
