How to Change the Pump on a Top Load Kenmore Elite Washing Machine Leaking Water

A leaking water pump on the Kenmore Elite washing machine means that the bearing is bad. The water pump is a non-user serviceable part, which means that when the bearing goes bad, you must replace the pump. With a few basic tools, the average do-it-yourselfer can manage to change a pump on the Kenmore Elite washing machine. This allows you to avoid calling and paying a repair technician.

Instructions

      Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Pull the machine far enough from the wall to get behind it to work.

      Use a putty knife to pry up and remove the end caps from the control panel. Remove the retaining screws from the control panel with a Phillips screwdriver.

      Lift the control panel, and push it toward the back of the appliance. Unplug the wiring harness from the control panel. Remove the retaining clips using a flat-tip screwdriver to release them from the cabinet. Tilt the cabinet of the washer away from the frame, and set it aside.

      Remove the pump retaining clips using a flat-tip screwdriver. Pull the pump from the motor shaft. Release the hose clamps using a pair of pliers, and pull the hoses from the drain pump.

      Connect the hoses to the new drain pump using a pair of pliers. Place the pump on the motor shaft, and secure it with the retaining clips.

      Set the cabinet in place on the washing machine frame, and install the retaining clips with the flat-tip screwdriver. Plug the wiring harness into the control panel. Close the control panel by pulling it forward, and install the retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Install the end caps on the control panel, and push firmly to lock them into place.

      Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet. Push the washing machine into place against the wall.
