Testing the Flame Sensor on a Whirlpool Dryer

The flame sensor in your Whirlpool gas dryer is the safeguard that prevents the unit from starting without proper ignition. If the flame sensor doesn't sense an ignitor flame on startup, it shuts off the gas. This is an important safety feature, so it's important to address any issues with your sensor that may arise. You can test the sensor by opening up your Whirlpool dryer.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your putty knife under the corners of the top panel of your Whirlpool dryer. Pry up to pop the spring clips and lift the top panel up.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the corners in the rear of the dryer's front panel.

    • 3

Unplug the door latch wiring harness from the rear of the front panel.

    • 4

Lift the front panel up to remove it. On some models there will be another access panel located below the main front panel. Use your putty knife to pop this panel off as well.

    • 5

Locate the metal gas burner tube in the dryer. On some models this will be located on the bottom of the drum. On other models it will be located behind the drum. To take the drum out, remove the belt at the side of the drum from its pulley and slide the drum out of the unit.

    • 6

Turn on the dryer and set it to a high setting. You'll see the ignitor next to the sensor turn bright red. If the blowers don't start then the sensor is damaged. To replace it, proceed to the next step.

    • 7

Turn off the dryer and unplug the wiring harness connected to the sensor.

    • 8

Remove the screw holding the sensor in place and remove the sensor.

    • 9

Fit another sensor in the old one's place and replace the screw and wiring.

    • 10

      Reassemble the dryer.
