How to Install a Washing Machine Door Boot

One of the repair jobs that a DIYer can perform on a front load washing machine is installing a new door boot. The purpose of these boots is to help seal the front door during the wash cycle so water doesn't leak out. Once the washing machine is disassembled and the old boot removed, installing a new washing machine door boot can be done fairly quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine if it is currently plugged in.

    • 2

Soak the door boot in warm water for approximately 15 minutes to help it soften.

    • 3

Fold the boot so the collar is up and extended. Align the boot so the drain hole in the bottom lines up with the drain hose beneath the door. Slip the boot over the washer tub.

    • 4

Slip the boot retaining strap or spring around the boot to hold it firmly in place on the outer collar of the tub.

    • 5

Align the front panel of the machine so the hole lines up with the boot. Slip the panel in place on the front of the washer. Hold this in place with one hand or have an assistant hold it for you. Secure in place with screws and a screwdriver.

    • 6

Replace the bottom kick panel, securing with screws if needed.

    • 7

Slip the control panel on the top of the washer. Secure with screws. Insert the soap dispenser drawer into the dispenser slot.

    • 8

Slide the top of the washing machine into place. Secure with screws.

    • 9

Fold the outer part of the boot around the door opening.

    • 10

Replace the washer door and secure the door bolts by tightening them with a wrench.
