How to Fix a Maytag Neptune Dryer Ignition

A Maytag Neptune gas dryer consist of an electronic ignition device that lights the pilot when the machine is in use. This feature saves fuel because the pilot light only burns gas when it is being used instead of staying lighted all the time. If the pilot light on your Maytag Neptune gas dryer is not igniting and, therefore, not heating, the electronic ignition device may be clogged with debris. Clean a dirty ignitor using common household tools and solutions.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the gas supply to the dryer has not been interrupted. Trace the gas line from the dryer and ensure that a shutoff on the line has not been turned off. Check the gas meter or other gas appliances in the home to ascertain if gas service to the home has been interrupted.

    • 2

Shut off the power to the dryer by unplugging its electrical cord or by turning off the circuit breaker associated with it.

    • 3

Remove the hex screws at the bottom of the access panel at the bottom front of the dryer. Turn the screws counterclockwise with a nut driver. Pull off the panel to access the internal parts of the ignition system.

    • 4

Locate the electronic ignition device, which is a cylindrical device about the size of a roll of quarters. The device sits next to the pilot light.

    • 5

Remove the two screws that secure the electronic ignition device to its bracket using a Phillips screwdriver and by turning the screws counterclockwise.

    • 6

Pull off the wiring clip from the ignition device using a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 7

Soak the device in a small plastic bowl filled with penetrating catalyst. Penetrating catalyst is a petroleum-based product that helps loosen stuck-on debris. Soak the device in the dish for about half an hour.

    • 8

Brush the contacts on the ignition device with an old toothbrush and the catalyst. Dry the device with a paper towel and reinstall it by reversing the steps you used to remove it. Restore power to the dryer. If the dryer still doesn't ignite, remove the electronic ignition device and replace it with a new one.
