Tightening the Belt on a Maytag Atlantis

The Maytag Atlantis dryer requires a properly fitting dryer belt to function correctly. A dryer belt that is too loose can slip from the pulley and motor shaft inside the dryer's cabinet, causing the dryer's drum to not spin or fail to spin at the intended rate. A loose dryer belt should be replaced with a new belt. Replace the pulley's spring clip to ensure the idler pulley is applying the proper tension to the new belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Maytag dryer from the wall outlet for safety. Open the door and remove the two screws on either side of the front opening with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 2

Lift the door until the hinges are free from the slots on the side of the dryer's front panel. Set the door aside.

    • 3

Pull the two upright sections of the front panel away from the dryer. Rotate the top of each upright section of the front panel away from the dryer's top panel, then lift the bottom of the front panel from the bottom of the dryer's cabinet. Set the front panel aside.

    • 4

Pull the Maytag's top panel toward the front of the dryer and then lift it from the dryer's cabinet. Set the top panel aside.

    • 5

Reach below the drum and depress the idler pulley to release the tension on the rubber belt. Remove the belt from the pulley and motor shaft.

    • 6

Lift the drum from the inside of the dryer's cabinet by the belt and front edge of the drum. Set the drum onto the floor and remove the worn belt.

    • 7

Place the new belt onto the ridge of the drum previously occupied by the old belt.

    • 8

Return to the idler pulley. Remove the spring clip from the pulley and connection point on the inside of the dryer by pulling the spring until the "U" shaped ends are unhooked from the pulley and cabinet. Dispose of the spent spring.

    • 9

Replace the spring clip with a new spring. Place the "U" shaped ends inside the opening on the idler pulley and inside of the Maytag's cabinet.

    • 10

Lift the drum by the front edge and belt and place it back inside of the cabinet.

    • 11

Reach under the drum and depress the idler pulley. Loop the belt around the pulley and motor shaft. Release the pulley. Rotate the drum by hand. The drum should spin in a fluid motion to signify a proper installation.

    • 12

Place the top panel onto the dryer and slide it rearward and back into place. Place the bottom edge of the front panel into the slots on the bottom-front edge of the dryer's cabinet. Rotate the front panel toward the top panel.

    • 13

Replace the two screws on the side of the dryer's front opening opposite the location of the door hinges with the screwdriver.

    • 14

Replace the two hinge plates into the slots on the side of the dryer's front opening. Press the door downward to lock the hinges in place. Replace the screws into the door hinges and close the door.
