How to Replace a Broken Boot Seal on a Maytag Front Loader

Maytag front-loading washing machines need a watertight seal between the washer tub and the front of the machine. A boot seal, also called a gasket, provides the seal required to hold the water inside the machine. A broken boot seal will cause water and soap to leak out of the front of the machine. Replacing the boot seal is a cheap repair that can be accomplished in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the machine from the wall.

    • 2

Remove the three screws from the back of the top panel. Slide the panel forward, and lift it up. Removing the top panel of the washing machine gives you access to the front panel.

    • 3

Pull out on the detergent door at the front of the machine to expose the screw behind it. Remove the screw, using a screwdriver, as well as the screws on each side of the control panel. Take out the screw from the top of the control panel, and remove it from the machine.

    • 4

Open the door of the washing machine. Take out the screws from the latch, and remove it. Slide your screwdriver around the wire clamp on the door to release it. Remove the screws from the door well, and pull the front panel from the machine.

    • 5

Loosen the screws that hold the seal clamp in place. Pull the boot seal off the tub. Align the notch of the new seal facing up, and press the seal onto the tub.

    • 6

      Reassemble the machine.
