Setting Up a Kenmore Dryer

Setting up a Kenmore dryer isn’t like plugging in a toaster or refrigerator. There are additional steps to installing the dryer and they vary depending on whether you have an electric or gas dryer. Rather than pay an appliance service person to install your Kenmore dryer, set it up yourself. This can save you some money and the time spent waiting for the service technician to arrive.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Lay the shipping carton on its side. Open the carton and grasp the dryer around the cabinet to gently pull the dryer from the carton. Do not grab the dryer by its control panel to pull it from the carton.

    • 2

Remove all packing materials from the dryer. Remove the packing foam from the bottom of the dryer. Sit the dryer upright.

    • 3

Open the dryer door to remove the hinge screws to change the door swing. You can change the door swing to open in the direction that is most convenient for you and your laundry room design. Remove the two screws from each hinge and pull the door from the dryer.

    • 4

Slide a small flat-head screwdriver to pry the plastic hole plugs from the opposite side of the dryer door opening. Rotate your Kenmore dryer door 180 degrees.

    • 5

Line up the holes in the hinges with the holes in the dryer door opening. Secure the dryer door to the dryer cabinet with the hinge screws you removed previously. Insert the plastic hole plugs into the hinge holes on the opposite side of the dryer door opening.

    Gas Dryer

    • 6

Remove the cap from the gas connector on the back of the Kenmore dryer. Apply pipe thread sealant over the female threaded pipe on the back of the dryer. Connect the male end of a 1/2-inch to 3/8-inch male-to-female pipe reducer to the back of the dryer. Tighten the reducer with an adjustable wrench.

    • 7

Apply thread sealant around the female threads of the reducer. Attach the 1/2-inch inside diameter flexible gas line to the reducer. Tighten the line with the wrench.

    • 8

Apply thread sealant around the female threads of the gas line from the laundry room wall. Connect the flexible gas line from the dryer to the gas line from the wall. Tighten the gas line with the wrench.

    • 9

Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dish washing detergent with 1 tablespoon of water. Apply the soap mixtures around the connectors attached to the gas line and dryer.

    • 10

Turn on the gas to the dryer and watch for air bubbles to appear around the connectors. Remove the connector to apply more thread sealant and then reconnect the line if bubbles appear.

    • 11

Slide a 4-inch duct clamp over each end of 4-inch flexible dryer duct. Slide the duct over the exhaust pipe on the back of the dryer. Tighten the screws on the duct clamp to secure the duct to the dryer.

    • 12

Slide the opposite end of the duct over the outside exhaust vent pipe. Tighten the screw on the clamp to secure the duct to the outside exhaust pipe.

    • 13

Push the gas dryer in its final position. Lay a level on the top of the dryer from left to right. Turn the feet on the dryer to raise or lower it until the bubble in the level shows that the dryer is level from left to right. Reposition the level to lay on the top of the dryer from back to front and adjust the feet to ensure the gas dryer is level from front to back.

    • 14

Plug the dryer’s power cord into a grounded outlet to operate the dryer’s control panel. Run the Kenmore gas dryer through one cycle to ensure the gas line bleeds properly and the burner lights. Turn off the timer and wait five minutes to start the dryer once again if the first attempt fails to light the burner.

    Electric Dryer

    • 15

Purchase a dryer cord the fits the electric dryer outlet in the wall of your laundry room.

    • 16

Remove the screws from the terminal block access cover plate at the top back corner of the Kenmore electric dryer. Take the plate off the back of the dryer to expose the terminal block.

    • 17

Thread the strain relief connector, supplied with the dryer cord, over the end of the cord without the plug. Make sure the thread on the cord faces away from the plug.

    • 18

Install the cord and the threaded end of the connector through the round hole in the dryer cabinet beneath the terminal block opening. Thread the lock nut, supplied with the dryer cord, over the ends of the cord and onto the threaded end of the connector. Screw the lock nut onto the connector to secure it to the dryer cabinet.

    • 19

Attach the ring connector on the end of the white wire from your dryer cord to the middle screw on the terminal block. Attach the connector on the black wire to the screw to the right of the white wire. Attach the red wire to the screws to the left of the white wire. Tighten all three terminal screws to hold the cord to the block. If your dryer cord has a green wire, attach it beneath the green ground screw attached to the dryer cabinet along the edge of the terminal block opening.

    • 20

Tighten the two screws on the stain relief connector to keep the dryer cord from being pulled from the back of the dryer. Replace the terminal block cover plate on the back of the dryer.

    • 21

Slip a 4-inch duct clamp over each end of 4-inch flexible dryer duct. Slide the duct over the exhaust pipe on the back of the electric dryer. Tighten the screws on the duct clamp, securing the duct to the dryer.

    • 22

Slip the opposite end of the duct over the outside exhaust vent pipe located on an exterior wall. Tighten the screw on the clamp to secure the duct to the outside exhaust.

    • 23

Push your Kenmore dryer in its final position. Lay a level on the top of the dryer from left to right. Rotate the feet on the dryer to raise or lower it until the bubble in the level shows that the dryer is level from left to right. Position the level on the dryer where is lays from back to front and adjust the feet to ensure the electric dryer is level from front to back.
