How to Fix a Subfloor From Washer Machine Vibration

Washing machines use a lot of shaking and motion to get your clothes clean. When the washer is properly level and sat on a sturdy floor it should not rattle the floor to the point of annoyance. A weak subfloor, however, will cause the washer machine to shake. This is because the subfloor has come loose from the joist beneath. Sistering the joist with another piece of wood will close the gap between the subfloor and the joist and stop your washer from making all that noise.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the washing machine out from its current location. Drill through the floor into the basement with a long drill bit in the center of where the washer was previously sitting. Have a partner locate the drill bit on the basement ceiling to find the location of your washing machine.

    • 2

Measure the length of the floor joists sitting directly beneath the washing machine. Measure 3 feet beyond the sagging issue in the joist if the sagging is isolated in one area. Cut 2-by-4s to this length.

    • 3

Apply construction adhesive to the sagging joist underneath your washing machine in the sagging area. Press the 2-by-4 onto the adhesive with the top of the new board touching the subfloor above. Clamp the board in place.

Hammer a row of three nails going from the bottom of the new board to the top, every 16 inches.
