How to Fix a Dryer Vent in a Crawl Space

Venting is an important part of setting up a dryer because the vent carries hot air and excess moisture to the exterior of the home. If your dryer vent terminates in the crawl space, you must fix the vent so that it extends all the way outside the house. If you do not fix the dryer venting, excess moisture can build up under the house, resulting in the development of mold and mildew or warped wooden floor boards.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the crawl space and locate the end of the dryer vent, which consists of a rigid round duct. If you see a cap on the end of the duct, pry it off using pliers or cut it off using tin snips.

    • 2

Measure from the end of the dryer duct to the nearest exterior wall of the crawlspace. Note the measurement.

    • 3

Measure a length of 4-inch-diameter duct to the measurement you determined. Mark the location with the pencil. Cut the duct to size using tin snips.

    • 4

Carry the new metal duct section under the crawl space. Insert the crimped end of the duct onto the existing end of the dryer duct. Wrap duct tape around the seam where the two ducts join.

    • 5

Cut a hole in the house skirting or the wall material at the location where the duct exits the home. Use a hole saw with a 4-inch-diameter bit or a hammer drill for masonry or brick surfaces.

    • 6

Pull the end of the duct into the inside of the wall hole, just until it rests inside.

    • 7

Apply a bead of exterior-grade silicon caulk around the exterior edge of a dryer vent cap. Insert the vent cap through the outside of the hole until it slides into the dryer vent on the inside. Position the vent so the opening in the hood faces the ground. Secure the vent cap to the external side of the wall using a power drill.
