Cabinet Removal on a Kenmore 27 Clothes Dryer

When learning how to fix your own Kenmore dryer, the first challenge you’ll come across is removing the dryer’s cabinet. The cabinet is the outside metal shell that protects the motor and other components. Without removing the cabinet, you cannot access the areas necessary for maintenance.
  1. Removable Parts

    • While the entire cabinet could be removed, it is not necessary to remove everything in order to gain full access to the clothes dryer. The top, front panel and back access panels provide direct access to all the major components of the machine. Removing anything else from the dryer results in instability and difficulty with reassembly.

    Top Panel

    • Remove the top panel of a Kenmore 27-inch clothes dryer by sliding a putty knife underneath the top surface. Feel around for two levers -- one on each side. Gently press the lever down and the top will release. Gently bring the top upward and secure it in place with either string or a chain.

    Front Panel

    • The front panel easily removes for access to the drum. In order to remove the panel, disconnect the dryer’s door trigger wire from the door. Next, remove the two screws on the interior that are holding the panel in place. Finally, slide the panel up and out.

    Access Panels

    • The back of the dryer has two access panels. The top access panel provides access to the heating unit in the machine. The bottom access panel is next to the vent unit and provides access for easy cleaning. Both panels are removed by unscrewing the four corner screws holding the panel in place.
