How to Vent Your Dryer Out of the Left Side

The standard location for your dryer’s exhaust vent is along the bottom of the rear panel. In most laundry rooms, the rear vent placement usually doesn’t hamper the way you attach your dryer’s exhaust vent to the vent along the wall of your laundry room. Depending on the location of your wall vent, it may be necessary to change the exhaust vent location from the rear of your dryer to your dryer’s left side in order to make it more convenient to attach your dryer to your wall vent.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • 1 1/2-inch metal putty knife
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Power drill
  • Hammer
  • Dryer side vent kit
  • 4-inch aluminum duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your dryer’s power cord from the electrical wall outlet. Disconnect the dryer’s vent hose from the rear of the dryer if it is currently connected.

    • 2

Pull your dryer out from the laundry room wall to access the left side and the rear. Remove the screw from the top of the rear dryer vent.

    • 3

Slide a 1 1/2-inch wide metal putty knife between the bottom of the dryer’s control console and the top of the dryer. This releases the clips holding the panel to the dryer cabinet. Some consoles are held to the top of the dryer by two screws found on each side of the control panel. Remove these screws to release the console from the cabinet.

    • 4

Rotate your dryer’s control panel off the top of the cabinet to access the screws holding the top of the cabinet to the rear dryer panel. Remove the screws holding the top to the rear panel. Slide the top panel forward, and lift it off the dryer cabinet.

    • 5

Insert the putty knife into the seam beneath your dryer’s door to release the clips holding the lower front panel onto the dryer cabinet. Pull the lower panel off the dryer.

    • 6

Unhook the two springs on each side of the door panel along the bottom. Remove the two screws from the bottom of the door panel. Remove the screws holding the lint duct to the blower housing at the bottom of the dryer. Pull the moisture sensor wire from the side of the lint duct.

    • 7

Remove the two screws holding the sides of the dryer cabinet to the top corners on your dryer’s front panel. Disconnect the door switch wiring harness directly behind the dryer door panel to release the front door panel. Look in the resource section for disassembly directions for other dryer models if your model appears to open differently.

    • 8

Reach inside your dryer’s cabinet to locate the duct attached to the blower housing. Locate the bracket on the side of the 4-inch dryer duct where it connects to the floor of the dryer with a screw.

    • 9

Remove the screws holding the duct bracket to the floor of the dryer. Grab the original duct from the rear of your dryer. Pull the duct from the back of the dryer.

    • 10

Reach inside your dryer’s cabinet to push on the plastic tabs holding the 4-inch round knockout on the left side of the dryer. If your dryer doesn’t have these tabs, attach a 1/4-inch drill bit to a power drill. Drill through the four dimples located around the 4-inch knockout on the left side of the dryer. Strike the exterior of the knockout with a hammer to pop it from the cabinet.

    • 11

Slide the dryer duct with the attached bracket, provided with a side vent kit, into the blower housing. Attach the bracket to the floor of the dryer with the screw you removed from the original duct.

    • 12

Attach the 4-inch duct elbow to the remaining piece of dryer duct that came with the kit. Secure the elbow to the duct with 4-inch wide aluminum duct tape. Ensure you cover the seam where the duct and the elbow meet.

    • 13

Insert the duct and the elbow through the front of the dryer. Slide the straight end of the duct through the knockout on the left side of your dryer.

    • 14

Connect the elbow to the duct you attached to the floor of the dryer. Secure the elbow to the duct with additional aluminum duct tape.

    • 15

Attach the cover plate, provided with the vent kit, to the original knockout in the rear of your dryer. Attach the plate with the screw you removed from the original dryer vent. If your vent kit comes with plastic snap-in cover plates, insert them into the knockout. Push on the plate until it snaps into the rear of your dryer.

    • 16

Reverse your dryer’s disassembly steps to reassemble your dryer.
