How to Install Washing Machine Compression Valves

In addition to electricity, washing machines also need a water supply to work. The easiest way to connect a washing machine to a water supply is by installing a compression valve. These supply valves screw onto the water supply pipe and maintain a watertight seal because of the threaded compression fittings. With a few simple tools, a you can install washing machine compression valves on their own, without having to wait for a plumber.

Instructions

    • 1

Square off the end of the copper pipes where you will be installing the compression valves, if needed. Clamp a pipe cutter around the copper pipe and circle it around the pipe until the end is cut off.

    • 2

Sand down the edges of the pipe with a wire brush to remove any burrs.

    • 3

Apply flux to the outside of the copper pipe and the inside of the compression fitting.

    • 4

Slip the compression fitting over the end of the copper pipe. Use a plumber's torch to heat solder along the seam between the pipes and seal the connection.

    • 5

Wrap the compression fitting threads with plumber's tape.

    • 6

Screw the washing machine supply valves on top of the compression fittings. Tighten them with a wrench.

    • 7

Connect the water supply hoses from the washing machine to the supply valves by tightening the supply hose coupings over the outlets. Tighten the couplings with a pair of pliers.
