How to Fix Gear Cases on Washing Machines

Many owners don’t realize that the washing machines they use have a complicated motor that has a transmission much like the one in their cars. The transmission gear case houses the gears that create torque to turn the tub during the agitation part of the washer cycle. Whether the gear case is leaking or no longer turning the tub, you need to replace it. The process can vary depending on the model of your washer but it generally requires disassembling the motor assembly and replacing the gear case assembly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer before beginning. Turn off the hot and cold water valves. Disconnect the water supply hoses from the back of the unit by unscrewing the connections. Disconnect the drain hose by unclamping it.

    • 2

Pull the agitator top out of the washer tub. Pry off the agitator cap with the screwdriver. Pull out the dust cap if your unit has one. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt that holds the agitator to the unit and pull the agitator out of the tub.

Place a towel or cloth on the floor behind the washer and tilt the washer back so that the back panel rests on the cloth to expose the motor.

    • 4

Unsnap the pump clips and remove the pump from the motor shaft. Disconnect the motor wires and move them to the side. Use the socket wrench to remove the gear case from the rest of the unit. Pull the motor and gear case out of the unit.
