DIY: Maytag Ensignia Timer Overheats

An overheating timer in your Maytag Ensignia causes the dryer to not stay on long enough to dry your clothes. It is also a potential fire hazard since the plastic body of the timer might melt and ignite a fire. An overheating timer requires replacement because the internal components have become defective and cannot be repaired. Removing and installing a new timer in your Maytag Ensignia is less difficult than in most dryers because the control console does not require removal from the dryer top.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Maytag Ensignia dryer power cord from the dedicated dryer outlet. Slide the dryer forward to have access to the back of the dryer.

    • 2

Remove the six hex-head screws securing the back panel of the control console with a nut driver. Pull the back panel away from the control console and set it to the side.

    • 3

Grab the metal ends of the wires connecting to the time terminals with a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull the wires off of the terminals.

    • 4

Pull the timer knob off of the front of the console. Remove the single screw securing the timer to the inside of the console with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Twist the timer body counterclockwise with your fingers to release the locking tab from the slot in the console. Remove the timer completely from the Ensignia dryer.

    • 6

Insert the new timer into the console with the tab on the right side of the timer just above the slot in the console. Rotate the timer clockwise to lock the tab behind the slot. Secure with the single retaining screw.

    • 7

Slip the two wires over the the terminals on the new timer. The wire ends will lock into place over the terminal spades.

    • 8

Position the back panel over the back of the control console and secure it with the retaining screws.

    • 9

Slide the Ensignia back to its operating position and push the timer knob over the timer shaft protruding through the front of the control console. Plug the dryer power cord back into the dedicated dryer outlet.
