Leaking Gear Case on a Kenmore Washer

The gear case in your Kenmore washer is part of the transmission, which is a requirement to turn the tub in top loaders. Front-loading washers don't have transmissions and therefore no gear case. If the gear case is leaking, oil may spill out of the unit and the agitator may work sporadically. Whether the case is cracked or has a hole in it, the best solution is to replace the part with a new one. The process will vary depending on the model of Kenmore washer but essentially you just disassemble the motor and transmission assembly to access the gear box.

Unplug the washer from the electrical socket and turn off the hot and cold water valves. Disconnect the two water supply hoses and the drain hose attached to the back of the unit.

    • 2

Open the washer door and pull out the top of the agitator. Use your screwdriver to pry off the agitator cap. Remove the bolt at the bottom of the agitator with the socket wrench and pull the agitator of the tub.

Lay the washer on its back to expose the motor assembly at the bottom of the unit. Remove the pump clips and the pump from the motor. Disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the gear case from the rest of the unit. Pull out the motor and gear box out of the bottom of the unit.

Remove the thrust washer and the two clutch support rings from the gear shaft. Slide the clutch off the gear shaft. Separate the motor and gear box from each other by removing the bolts, screws and clips that hold them together.

Pull off the isolator and pry off the coupling clog. Unscrew the motor plate from the old gear case. Screw the motor plate onto the replacement gear case. Snap the coupling clog in place on the new gear case and slide the isolator onto it.

Connect the new gear case to the motor with the screws, bolts and snaps. Slide the clutch onto the new gear case’s shaft and slide the support rings and thrust washer into place. Reassemble the washer. Replace the hoses to the back of the unit. Turn the valves back on and restore electricity to the unit. Use as desired.
