How to Change the Bearing on a WM1832CW LG Washer

The WM1832CW LG washer is a front-loading, direct-drive washing machine. Direct drive washers operate without the use of a belt to power the appliance. The washer uses a coupling instead of the typical belt-and-pulley system. This allows the washing machine to run more quietly and conserve energy. As with other washers, the bearing can fail and require replacing. Before you attempt to repair the LG washer, read the manufacturer’s warranty. Do-it-yourself repairs typically void the appliance’s warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the power cord from the outlet or flip the breaker associated with the washing machine. Turn off the water supply valves.

    • 2

Remove the water supply hoses at the back of the washing machine by disconnecting the clamps and pulling them off gently. Place the ends of the water supplys hose in a bucket to drain.

    • 3

Loosen the screws at the rear of the worktop with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the worktop backwards and lift off the washer housing. Unfasten the screws on the back panel and pull the panel off the housing. The back of the tub unit is now exposed.

    • 4

Disconnect the wires on the thermostat, motor and heater. Disconnect the ground wires. Loosen the bolt on the direct drive system’s rotor but do not remove it completely. Tap the loosened bolt gently a few times with a rubber mallet.

    • 5

Remove the rotor bolt completely with a socket wrench. Lift the rotor up and out carefully to prevent damaging the magnets located in inside the rotor. Locate the bolts holding the direct drive system’s stator and remove them with a socket wrench. Lift the stator carefully out of the washer housing.

    • 6

Move to the front of the washer and open the filter door. Disconnect the small drain hose and stopper. Unscrew the screw located at the side of the filter and slide the kick plate to release the plinth.

    • 7

Open the washer door and remove the seal band around the door gasket. Locate the screws securing the front panel to the washer housing. Remove these screws and slide the front panel off.

    • 8

Pull the soap drawer carefully off the washer housing. Unscrew the screws securing the soap box to the control panel. Disconnect the wires running to the control panel and slide the panel off.

    • 9

Disconnect the sump hose at the bottom of the washer tub. Unfasten the screws securing the pressure bottle on the tub. Slide the suspension pins off the top of the legs. Push these legs away from the tub unit so the unit will hang from the washer’s top springs.

    • 10

Place several wood blocks under the tub unit. Grasp one corner of the tub unit and lift up while pushing it toward the center and then lowering it to disconnect the top spring. Grasp the other corner of the tub unit. Push it up and toward the center, and then lower it disconnecting the top spring. Let the tub unit rest on the wood blocks.

    • 11

Remove the tub unit through the rear of the washer housing and lay it face down on a clean tarp. Unscrew the screws that hold the two halves of the tub together. Pull the top portion of the tub off the bottom portion and lay them side by side. Lift the inner drum out of the interior of the tub unit.

    • 12

Spray the bolt that secures the bearing on the inner drum liberally with lubricant and wait for five minutes. Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolt. Lift the loosened bolt and old bearing off the inner drum. Wipe the inner drum clean with paper towels.

    • 13

Position the new bearing in place pushing it until it is flush against the inner drum. Secure the new bearing to the inner drum with the bolt and socket wrench. Reassemble the LG washing machine in the reverse order of how you disassembled it.
