How to Fix a Maytag A806 With Slow Agitation

Slow agitation on your Maytag A806 front-loading washing machine means the washer cannot properly clean the clothing. Typically, a bad agitator or damaged belt will cause the agitator to slow or not turn at all. Fortunately, both of these problems can be fixed with common tools and a few items available at appliance repair and home improvement centers. However, consult your Maytag A806's warranty, before starting any repairs, since they may void its warranty.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Agitator assembly kit
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Transmission belt
  • Pump belt

Instructions

  1. Replace the Agitator

    • 1

Open the lid of the washing machine and remove the screw located at the bottom of the agitator. Lift the old agitator up and out of the washer.

    • 2

Place the thrust washer from the agitator kit over the bottom half of the new agitator. Set the cam assembly on the top half of the agitator.

    • 3

Assemble both halves of the new agitator together by placing the top half on top of the bottom half and lining up the tabs.

    • 4

Set the new agitator inside the washing machine in its mounting location. Secure the new agitator by inserting the screw included in the kit into the hole near the bottom of the agitator and screwing it in until tight.

    Replace the Belts

    • 5

Place a 5-gallon bucket behind the washer. Push the top of the washer carefully back and lean it up against the bucket to gain access to the bottom of the washer. Remove the screws that secure the front panel in place and slide the panel down and off.

    • 6

Grasp the transmission belt with your hand and lift it off its pulley. Grasp the pump belt with your hand and lift it off the bottom of the transmission.

    • 7

Loosen, but do not remove, the three screws that hold the pump in place. Slide the pump over and to the left.

    • 8

Place the new transmission belt over the bottom of the transmission and center pulley where the old belt was mounted. Rotate the center pulley clockwise once or twice to set the belt in place.

    • 9

Position the new pump belt over the bottom of the pump and the bottom of the transmission where the old belt was mounted. Slide the pump over and to the right. The pump belt should be tight and the transmission belt loose.

    • 10

Grasp the motor with one hand and pull up to keep tension on the motor. Use your free hand to loosen the pump screw that faces the motor until the transmission belt is tight.

    • 11

Tighten the three pump screws. The transmission belt should now be tighter than the pump belt. Reattach the front panel and carefully stand the washer up.
