Frigidaire 2 Top Loading Washer Repair

If your older Frigidaire 2 top-loader washing machine begins to function improperly, you may be tempted to call in a repair technician. However, hiring a professional can be a costly option. Instead, consider repairing the machine yourself. If your Frigidaire washer makes a grinding noise when running or does not spin correctly, the tub bearings will need to be replaced. If the agitator becomes stuck or cracked, it will also require replacement.

Instructions

  1. Agitator Replacement

    • 1

Open the lid to the washing machine and lift the fabric softener dispenser off the top of the agitator. Insert your hand into the agitator and lift the dust cap up and out of the agitator.

    • 2

Attach a 7/16-inch socket wrench to a long wrench extension and insert it into the agitator. Fit the wrench over the bolt located at the bottom of the agitator.

    • 3

Hold the exterior of the agitator still with your free hand while you loosen the bolt. Lift the entire agitator out of the washing machine.

    • 4

Open the new agitator assembly kit and lay the parts out beside each other. Insert the thrust washer over the lower half of the new agitator. Insert the cam assembly into the upper half of the new agitator.

    • 5

Place the upper half of the new agitator onto the lower half and line up the tabs. Insert your hand inside the new agitator and press the tabs together.

    • 6

Insert the new agitator into the washing machine and secure it in place with the bolt. Rub a thin layer of liquid dish washing detergent around the edge of the dust cap seal. Insert the dust cap into the new agitator. Set the fabric softener dispenser back into place.

    Changing the Tub Bearing

    • 7

Remove the panels -- both top and back -- from the washer cabinet by unfastening the screws that hold the panels in place. Remove the weight located at the back section of the drum by unscrewing the screws and sliding it off.

    • 8

Slide the drive belt off and cut the wire tie carefully from the motor. Unplug the washer's motor. Disconnect the bolts that hold the motor in the washer with a socket wrench then lift the heavy motor up and out of the washing machine.

    • 9

Remove the rubber drain trap by unscrewing its screw and pulling the trap off. Squeeze the snap ring that secures the water level sensor to the washer and pull the sensor off. Disconnect the hose that runs to the water level switch.

    • 10

Detach each connector -- a total of three -- from the motor control board and pull off the connector attached to the washer’s pump motor. Unfasten the screws that hold the pump motor and its control board in place then remove the motor and control board from the washer housing.

    • 11

Slide the shock pins off of the tub by pressing the lock tab to release them then remove the shocks. Let the drum rest on a few pieces of wood placed directly under it. Remove the adhesive located on the front panel's door seal with a utility knife. Detach the holder clip and let the drum hang from the springs.

    • 12

Disconnect the springs from the drum by lifting a corner of the drum up, forward then lowering it. Disconnect the second spring in the same manner. Let the drum rest on the wooden supports before removing it from the washer cabinet.

    • 13

Lay the washer drum flat on its face. Unfasten the screws that hold the front and back drum together. Pull the two halves apart and set them side by side. Lift the inner tub up and out of the washer’s outer drum.

    • 14

Unfasten the old bearing bolt with a socket wrench. If you meet resistance, apply a liberal amount of lubricant to the bolt and wait a few minutes. Clean the surface where the new tub bearing will go with paper towels.

    • 15

Position the new bearing in place and secure the bolt with a socket wrench. Reassemble the washer by reversing the above steps.
