How to Fix a Dial Dispenser on an HE3 Kenmore Washing Machine

The Kenmore HE3 is a high-efficiency washing machine that uses less water and energy that traditional top-loading washers. However, the HE3 – as well as many other brands of high-efficiency washing machines – have been subject to consumer complaints regarding mold, mildew and foul smells, as well as detergent buildup in the soap, bleach and fabric softener dispensers. It's important to remove and clean out the dispensers on a regular basis to prevent such accumulations. If you experience other problems with your Kenmore HE3 washer's dispenser, such as broken parts, the dispenser cannot be fixed; you will need to replace it.

    • 1

Unplug the washer or turn off the appliance’s circuit breaker. This is a safety precaution to prevent electrocution or fires.

    • 2

Pull the dispenser door out as far as possible, then -- depending on your HE3 washer model -- either wiggle the door until it comes out or push the eject button, which will be located inside the dispenser door on the left side.

    • 3

Remove the siphon cup from the dispenser. The siphon cup is plastic and has a tube shape.

    • 4

Clean both the siphon cup and all three drawers of the dispenser to remove any mold, mildew or other liquid or powdery substances. For detergent buildup, washing with soap and water should be sufficient. However, to remove toxic substances like mold and mildew, use bleach or vinegar.

    • 5

Examine the empty dispenser compartment of the washing machine to ensure that there are no obstructions that would block the operation of the dispenser. Remove any buildup of detergent or other matter.

    • 6

Place the dispenser back into the washing machine. Restore power to the appliance.

    • 7

Run an empty washing machine cycle with either a cup of bleach or a cup of vinegar. This will help to remove mold, mildew and other matter from the washer.
