How to Check the Door Switch on a Maytag PYET44AYW

The Maytag PYET44AYW is a member of the Maytag Performa Dryer series. The dryer’s door switch is a mechanism that denotes whether the door is open or shut. If the door switch determines that the door is open, the dryer will not be operational. However, if the dryer does start when the door is open, the dryer may have an electrical short. Conversely, if the door is closed and the dryer does not start, the door switch may be malfunctioning.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the dryer from the power source or turn off the dryer’s circuit breaker to prevent a fire or electrocution,

    • 2

Check the prong on the door switch. Open the dryer’s door to locate the prong, which is the small metal contact on the dryer that is depressed when the door switch is activated. If the prong appears to be defective – of if it has fallen off – this is the problem, not the door switch itself. If the prong is intact, proceed.

    • 3

Remove the door switch. The door switch is on the top of the right side door well and attaches to the door’s front panel by a clip. To remove the switch, pull the clip’s arms in opposite directions and then pull the switch from the door’s panel.

Disconnect the wiring from the door switch by pulling it out of the terminals. Examine the wiring and the terminals for corrosion.Use a soft cloth moistened with vinegar to remove any corrosion. Then use a dry cloth to completely dry the wiring and terminals. It is possible that the corrosion is causing the door switch to malfunction. However, if no corrosion is present, proceed.

Use a multimeter to test continuity. Set the multimeter to ohms X1. Test the area between the COM and the NO switch terminals for continuity. Continuity should exist until the switch has been activated. If no continuity occurs, the switch is faulty and should be replaced.

After checking the door switch, reconnect the wiring to the terminals and restore power to the dryer.
