Measure the dimensions of the washing machine and then add two inches to the length to allow for extra room on each side of the appliance -- which will also make the washer more stable. Then, determine how high you want the pedestal to be. Many washing machine pedestals are 15 inches high, but you can choose to make the pedestal higher or lower, depending on the height of the items you wish to store under the washing machine.
Using a circular saw, cut wood beams and MDF or plywood according to your specified dimensions.
Frame the depth beams and the width beams into a rectangle, leaving the front side open to allow for storage access. Place one beam in the middle of the rectangular frame as a floor joist. Connect the beams using three 3-inch wood screws in each corner and three 3-inch wood screws in the floor joist.
Put construction adhesive on top of the frame, covering the entire perimeter of the frame and the floor joist. Then, attach the MDF or plywood to the top of the frame with approximately fourteen 1 5/8-inch screws along the perimeter.
Use paint, stain or decorative trim molding to increase the attractiveness of the storage pedestal. Place laundry items directly in the storage pedestal, or place the objects in decorative baskets or pails, and then place the containers in the storage pedestal.
