Whirlpool Duet Washer's Push Button Is Broken

Whirlpool manufactures many types of appliances, including the Duet series of washers and dryers. A Whirlpool Duet washing machine is a front-loading appliance with an electronic control panel at the top front of the appliance. Unfortunately, these control panels are not forgiving, and if a button becomes stuck or the control panel malfunctions, the entire control panel must be replaced.
  1. Ordering a New Control Panel

    • Locate the model number of your particular Duet model to ensure that you order the correct control panel. The model number is on a sticker on the left side of the door jamb. Online part suppliers such as Repair Clinic, Sears Parts Direct and Part Select carry replacement parts for virtually all appliances. To order the new control panel, visit one of these websites -- or another reputable site if you find a better price.

    Safety First

    • To replace the control panel of the Whirlpool Duet washing machine, you must disassemble part of the cabinet. Before disassembling the cabinet, disconnect the power to the appliance. The Whirlpool Duet washing machine uses a standard power outlet, and power can be disconnected from the appliance by unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet. Turn off the two water supply valves by turning the handles clockwise until tight. Move the washing machine away from the wall.

Removing the Top Panel and Trim

    • To reach the control panel, you must remove the top panel and trim ring from the appliance. Remove the screws from the rear of the top panel. Grasp the trim ring, which runs from the top of the washer and around the washer's opening, and pull it away from the washer. Pull the detergent dispenser drawer out as far as it will go, then depress the tab in the rear and remove the drawer.

    Replacing the Control Panel

    • Remove the screws from the dispenser housing that secure the control panel to the front of the appliance. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the top of the front panel. Pull the front panel away from the appliance and depress the tab on the control panel wire connector to disconnect the malfunctioning control panel. Put the old panel aside, and reverse the process with the new control panel: Install the new control panel by snapping together its wire connector and the machine's. With the wiring secure, install the new panel by reversing the steps taken to remove the old panel.
