My Kenmore Washer Spills Water When It's Filling

Sometimes leaks can develop in your Kenmore washing machine. The leaks may occur only when the washer initially fills with water or each time it refills the machine with water during the wash cycle. The leakage problem may be caused by something you can fix, which saves you the expense of a repair by a plumber.
  1. Too Full

    • If you have put too much laundry in the washer, water can spill when the washer fills. This is because the water will bounce off the inserted laundry as it fills the washer tub. This can be prevented by filling the machine with less laundry per load. If you already have a large load in the washer and water is leaking, you can stop the spilling by removing some of the laundry from the washer tub. This keeps the splashes inside the washer instead of on your laundry room floor.

    Unbalanced Load

    • You may not have overloaded the washer, but how you have put the laundry in the machine can cause it to splash water out when filling. Examine the washer tub to determine whether the bulk of the laundry is on one side of the tub instead of evenly distributed around the agitator. A leak frequently occurs if the laundry is stacked too high on the side of the washer tub directly under the area where the water enters the machine. Redistributing the laundry around the washer tub will prevent the water from spilling out when the machine fills.

    Sitting Level

    • If the washer is not sitting level, that may be to blame for the washer spilling out water when it fills. Try pushing the sides of the washer at each corner to determine whether it stays in place or rocks a little bit. If it rocks, you need to get it level to stop the water from spilling out. Adjust the washer legs with a wrench. Either lengthen the legs that are too short or shorten the legs that are too long. The nuts on the legs may be loose enough for you to make the adjustment with your hands. If not, a wrench can loosen and tighten the nuts.

    Hoses

    • If the water spills onto the floor from the rear of the machine, the fill hoses may be loose and leaking water. These are the hoses that connect to the water supply on the wall. Reach back to where the hoses connect to the washer and twist them to confirm they are fastened securely on the machine. Hoses that are not connected tightly may leak when the washer fills.
