What Does F-20 Stand for on a Whirlpool Washing Machine?

Whirlpool washing machines provide a series of error codes that display on the LD screen when it detects that something has gone wrong with its operation. The code F20 will flash when the pressure switch isn’t tripped after 6 minutes of the machine filling with water. The error code means that the machine isn’t detecting any water coming into the wash tub.
  1. No Water Entering

    • The F20 error code can be tripped if there is no water or when there is little water coming in. If there is no water, then it could mean that the inlet valve is clogged and not letting any water through. Check the inlet screens and clean them out if there is a lot of debris stuck to them. Also, check to ensure that the water taps are on and that the inlet hoses are kink and clog free.

    Water Siphoning Problem

    • If there is water entering the wash tub, then it could be a matter of water siphoning that is causing the F20 error code to pop up. This occurs when there is no air gap in the drain line, which creates a vacuum and the water drains prematurely. To prevent this from happening, the drain pipe shouldn’t be more than 72 inches from the floor or less than 34 inches from the floor at times. Make sure not to seal the top of the drain pipe, as this could cause more problems.

    Pressure Switch

    • If there is water entering and it’s not a siphoning problem, it could be a problem with the pressure switch. To check the pressure switch, remove the screws for the top panel located at the back of the washer. The pressure switch is at the rear-right corner and is a round plastic device with an air hose and other connectors attached to it. Make sure these hoses and connectors are all attached properly and that there are no kinks or other blockages. Also, ensure that there are no leaks or cracks in the air hose.

    Considerations

    • Before doing any troubleshooting, unplug or otherwise remove the power source from the washing machine. When doing any type of troubleshooting for a Whirlpool washing machine, it is best to consult your owner’s manual and follow the instructions exactly.
