How to Stabilize the Base of a Washer

When a washing machine is installed, leveling the washer is part of the standard installation process. Over time, the stability of the washer may be compromised, and it may begin to rock or vibrate around your laundry room. When this happens, it signals the need to level the washer again to restore the stability. You do not need an appliance technician to do the leveling, as this is one job that you can tackle on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the washer to a sturdy, level floor, if you have not already done so. You should not put the washer on a carpeted floor because it is not a stable surface. Wood, concrete, tile or linoleum floors are stable floor surfaces.

    • 2

Push down on each corner of the washer to determine which legs need to be adjusted. The washer will rock if it is not sitting level. You may need to adjust only one leg, or it make take adjustments to three legs to stabilize the washer.

    • 3

Prop up the front or rear of the washer with a wood block to adjust the legs. The machine is heavy, so you may need a friend to help. On some washers, only the rear legs can be adjusted; others have both rear and front adjustable legs.

    • 4

Unscrew the nuts on the legs that you want to adjust. Do this by hand or with a wrench if the nuts are too tight.

    • 5

Tighten the nuts on the legs once you have made the adjustments.

    • 6

Remove the wood block and lower the washer to see if it is level. If not, make more adjustments to the legs.
