How to Remove a Drain Pump From a Whirlpool Cabrio With Water in the Tub

The Whirlpool Cabrio is an automatic washing machine with a drain pump for emptying water from the tub. The pump is located behind the back panel and has two connection points: one for the water to flow into the pump from the tub and another for the water to pump out to the drain hose. If there is water standing in the tub, this usually means the pump failed in the middle of a wash cycle. Extra precautions must be taken to prevent flooding the laundry room when you remove the pump.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from your Cabrio washer.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply to the washer by turning the two knobs clockwise on the wall behind the unit until they're tight.

    • 3

Unscrew the water supply hoses from the back of the washer with a pair of pliers.

    • 4

Remove the bolts around the four edges of the back panel with a nut driver. Slide the panel along the power cord and set it aside.

    • 5

Unplug the wiring harness from the left side of the water pump as you face the rear of the appliance. The pump is connected to two rubber hoses.

    • 6

Take out the bolts that hold the pump to the bracket inside the washer with the nut driver.

    • 7

Position a bucket under the water pump.

    • 8

Squeeze the clamp on the top hose with the pliers to release the hose. Pull the hose off of the pump and lower it into the bucket to drain the water from the tub. As the bucket fills up, squeeze the rubber hose tightly to halt the flow of water then empty out the bucket. Continue draining the hose into the bucket until the water slows to a trickle.

Squeeze the clamp on the remaining hose on the pump. Wiggle the hose back and forth to release it from the pump. You can now remove the drain pump from your Cabrio washer and take it to an appliance store for a replacement.
