How to Switch the Dryer Door of a Whirlpool Duet Steam Dryer

You have a choice when it comes to which way your dryer door opens. Whirlpool usually mounts the door hinge on the right side of the drum opening, making the door swing left to right. You might find this inconvenient due to the location of nearby cabinets or other appliances. Some people prefer the door to open a particular way because they are right- or left-handed. Reversing the direction of the door is relatively straightforward, and the job requires only common household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the dryer door. Remove the four screws holding the hinge to the frame of the dryer. Hold the door while you work to ensure that it doesn't drop down suddenly. Place the door, with the outer side down, on a towel or other soft surface to prevent scratches.

    • 2

Look down at the back of the dryer door with the bottom edge nearest to you. Imagine a clock dial covering the back of the door. Remove the Phillips screws at the 12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 o'clock positions. Leave the others in place.

    • 3

Lift off the inner door assembly and place it to one side. Grip the plastic ring inside the outer door assembly and turn it a few degrees clockwise to disengage the locking tabs. Reverse the ring by flipping it 180 degrees. Place it back inside the outer assembly and turn it a few degrees counterclockwise to lock back in position.

    • 4

Slide the tip of a flat-head screwdriver beneath the two plastic plugs on the opposite side of the outer door from the hinge. Also pry out the plastic cover protecting the area where the hinge goes if it's placed on the opposite side.

    • 5

Reverse the door hinge by removing the four screws holding it to the outer door assembly. Move the hinge to the opposite side and secure it by tightening the screws that held it to the other side. Push the plastic plugs into the holes where the hinge was.

    • 6

Wipe off any fingerprints on the inner door assembly and place it back inside the outer assembly. Reinsert and tighten the screws removed previously.

    • 7

Pry out the plastic plug on the front of the dryer near where the door hinge was attached. Push the plug into the hole the door used to latch into on the opposite side of the opening.

    • 8

Attach the door to the opposite side of the dryer with the screws removed previously. The door will now open and close in the opposite direction, and it is ready for use once you tighten the screws.
