How to Repair the Locking Mechanism on a Frigidaire Washer

The door to your Frigidaire washing machine needs to be kept closed during a cycle for several obvious reasons. The locking mechanism, a small plastic device inside the door frame, prevents the door being accidentally opened before the water used in the wash has been completely drained. You might want to repair the mechanism if your washing machine is unable to seal the door properly. If this is the case the appliance automatically abandons the wash and displays an error code.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door to the Frigidaire washing machine and find the locking mechanism holes on the right side of the opening. Clear anything blocking holes with a brush or other thin-tipped object. Check to see that nothing is caught on the pins inside the door.

    • 2

Pry up the bottom edge of the rubber boot seal where it attaches to the door frame and find the metal loop used to secure it in place. With a pair of needle-nose pliers, gently pull the loop out from beneath the boot seal and release the seal from the rim of the door frame.

    • 3

Remove the square-head screws above and below the locking mechanism holes. Reach around the back of the locking mechanism through where the rubber boot was attached and pull the mechanism backward and out. Make sure the three wiring connections are firmly in place on the right side of the mechanism.

    • 4

Push the mechanism back in place and replace the square-head screws. Stretch the rubber boot seal back over the rim of the door and replace the metal loop. Find the screws holding the door hinge to the washing machine.

    • 5

Tighten the screws holding the door to the appliance. Loose screws cause the door to sag and have trouble latching into the locking mechanism. The pins inside the door should pass easily though the holes in the mechanism.
