Leaks in a Whirpool Duet Washer

The Whirlpool Duet is a front loading consumer washing machine that can experience leaks just like any other washing machine. If you have already checked your household plumbing for leaks, the cause may be confined to the washer itself. No appliance expertise is required to inspect the machine and determine the origination of the leak.
  1. Door Opened

    • A unique feature of the Whirpool Duet washing machine is “Add a Garment,” which may be responsible for leaks. This feature gives the consumer a seven-minute window once the wash cycle has started in which additional items can be added to the load of laundry being washed. Since this is a front loading washer, leaks can occur when the door is opened to add additional laundry. Usually the leak is due to water dripping from the open door while you are inserting the laundry.

    HE Detergent

    • The Whirpool Duet washing machine is designed for use with high efficiency detergents. If you decide to use detergent that is not HE, it can result in leaks because the non-HE detergent creates an excessive amount of suds in the washer. If you are experiencing a leak from the rear of the machine through the air vent, this is the culprit. Replacing your non-HE detergent with HE detergent will stop these leaks.

    Hoses

    • The fill hoses that connect the water supply to the washer can cause leaks if they are not installed properly or if they have become loose. The hoses should be secure against the washer and the faucet. The gaskets around the hoses should also be secure. The bottom, rear of the machine is where the drain hose is attached. If it becomes loose, it can also result in leaks during the spin or drain portion of the cycle. Securing it will prevent leaks from the drain hose.

    Clogs

    • Whirlpool requires that the floor drain and sink in your laundry room be able to handle 17 gallons of water per minute. If those get clogged, you can end up with leaks during the drain and spin portion of the wash cycle. You may need gloves for your hands to remove any suspected clogs.
